Radio House Pendant VL45

In 1945, Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the Radio Pendant for the cafeteria in the Radio House . In collaboration with Louis Poulsen, Lauritzen created a lamp that remains an integral part of the Radio House’s architecture to this day, and is also found in several of Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects' buildings. Today, the VL45 hangs as a mimetic representation in Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects' own cafeteria at the brick-red Warehouse in Nordhavn.

The VL45 Radio Pendant features an original design consisting of a brass frame and a shade made of three layers of mouth-blown glass. The inner and outer layers are made of transparent clear glass, while the intermediate layer is made of white glass. This unique construction creates a lighting effect that is both functional and aesthetic.

Vilhelm Lauritzen's Vision

For Vilhelm Lauritzen, lighting was not just a technical necessity; it was an art form. His goal was to recreate the natural beauty of daylight through his lamps. This resulted in a harmonious balance between strong, directional light and softened, diffused light. The outcome was lighting with plastic qualities that highlighted the Radio Building's spaces in a unique way, adding subtlety to its already impressive structures and forms.
