A corky car-park adds character to urban area

The Timber House is a new parking garage in Copenhagen with a facade of cork and recycled aluminum. In the autumn of 2019, the proposal to line the façade with a pixelated relief won an open project competition.

The expression is a gesture to the area's history as a place where wood was stored and handled and at the same time a desire to add a more sustainable and playful element to Nordhavn as an urban district.

In addition to providing the area with parking spaces, there will be a lively, open and green area along the edge of the building with the possibility of shops, accommodation and meeting places as well as a Kiss ‘n Ride function.

The car park will be located next to the new metro station in Nordhavn and will have room for 350 cars. It is expected to be completed in 2022.

Quote:

“The proposal has a balanced whole, created by consistent and clear choices that give it a particularly strong and convincing character. It contributes a uniqueness that provides co-operation and counter-play to both Sundmolen and Trælastholmen. ”
