Visible from the motorway north of Copenhagen, a striking 14-story white concrete tower rises, characterized by its distinctive aluminum-glass louvered facade. This building, a symbol of the television era's rise to prominence, is widely recognized in Denmark.
Known as “TV-Byen” (TV City), the complex was originally designed in competition by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects in 1959. It officially opened in 1970, serving as the headquarters for Denmark’s national broadcaster, DR (Danmarks Radio). For decades, it housed the organization’s news production and administration until operations moved to Ørestad in 2006. Today, the modernist high-rise serves as a multi-tenant office hub with around 1,000 workstations.
Over time, however, the building’s condition has deteriorated. A report from the Danish Technological Institute identified structural issues, prompting its current owner, PensionDanmark, to initiate a major facade renovation, which begun in May 2025. Covering 5,000 square meters, the project is led by contractor NCC, and together with Artelia we have participated in advising both the developer and the local municipality in developing solutions that not only extends the life of the building but also preserves the building’s architectural legacy.
The work includes partial replacement and protective cladding of the original concrete facade elements, as well as full replacement of the glass-and-aluminum sections. Importantly, the building’s iconic aluminum louvers will be retained as a defining feature.
Renovation is scheduled for completion in early 2027. The building will remain fully operational throughout the process.
