First stage of major renovation project at Roskilde University is completed

The first phase of the extensive redevelopment project at Roskilde University has now been handed over. The project concerns the Pergola area, which forms a central hub on campus and strengthens the connections between the university’s buildings – both socially and academically.

The existing buildings in the area date back to the 1970s and are characterised by a lack of architectural values such as daylight, variation, materiality, and ceiling height. The redevelopment therefore includes the transformation and total renovation of five existing buildings, the construction of two new linking buildings and three new skywalks, as well as smaller refurbishments to adjoining structures.

The comprehensive renovation is based on the ambition to create a more open and attractive environment for study and research that supports a variety of teaching and working methods. The first phase has been completed on schedule, within budget, and to the agreed quality standards. In December, the area will be handed over to Roskilde University in preparation for the start of the 2026 semester.

Inside the buildings, new study environments, meeting areas, and teaching facilities have been created, along with large window sections that ensure ample daylight and views. Exposed installations have been incorporated to optimise both functionality and spatial quality. Outside, new network gardens – green outdoor spaces – connect the buildings more closely with the surrounding landscape.

The project covers 8,705 m² and has been carried out for the Danish Building and Property Agency (Bygningsstyrelsen) under the Strategic Framework Agreement, in collaboration with Hoffmann A/S, Artelia Denmark, and Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects.
