The construction of the new European School in Carlsberg City started on Thursday, June 9, 2016.
With the help of future students at the International School, the first sod was cut together with the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Municipality, Frank Jensen, Mayor of Children and Youth, Pia Allerslev, and CEO at Carlsberg City, Jens Nyhus.
Jens Nyhus began his speech by pointing out the role of the school in Carlsberg City: ‘European School Copenhagen is a milestone for Carlsberg and indicates that Carlsberg is on the right track. The school forms an important part of the vision for Carlsberg with life and learning and will ensure the position of Copenhagen internationally’. Frank Jensen continued with his speech by thanking everyone being involved in as well as helping and opening up for the project: ’The school will be a school of international format, built in respect of Carlsberg, the brewers, and the environment‘.
Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects won the turnkey competition for the new European School in Carlsberg City in 2015 in cooperation with NORD, BAM Denmark, and EKJ. The assessment committee included in their judging the importance of the architectural expression being deliberate and consistent and also fitting into Carlsberg City.
The school will be ready for occupancy in 2018 and will frame 1,210 pupils and teachers. The 14,000m2 will form a part of the internationally well-known Sankt Annæ Gymnasium and be the first of its kind in Denmark.
In addition to classrooms, the buildings will include recreational offers, sports hall, and outdoor areas. The school building will be centrally placed in Carlsberg City, between the old and historic buildings, and will appear as a modern answer to a school architecturally referring to the historic surroundings.
