"Focusing on sustainability and integrating recycled materials from the site, the project meets modern urban space requirements and breathes new life into the area," says the jury in their assessment of the new cultural and meeting centre at Westerwaldstraße in Berlin-Spandau, where STED - By og Landskab – part of Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects and Sehw Architektur has been awarded first place in the competition.
This project seamlessly merges sustainability, community, and a strong urban strategy. By reusing and upcycling local materials, the design reduces the need for new resources while honouring the area’s rich history. The landscape is envisioned as a vibrant, inclusive gathering space, offering green areas and recreational zones that invite people of all ages – from youth theatre groups and senior clubs to cosy neighbourhood cafés.
We look forward to collaborating with Bezirksamt Spandau von Berlin on our first project in Germany and the next steps for the future cultural and meeting centre at Westerwaldstraße.
