Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects wins the Nordhavn House competition

Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects has won the competition for 65 residences on the most westward situated construction field at Nordhavn – Fields 5.01 at Sundmolen – a locality that in the coming years will be transformed from an industrial harbor into an attractive residential area with space for small business activities.

The competition concerning 6,540m2 of housing was arranged by Kuben Byg A/S and Casa Nord. The first residential properties are expected to be on sale in June 2016, with planned occupancy in 2018. Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects has previously designed several estates with great qualities at Nordhavn – including the projects America Square, Marmormolen, and Havnekanten.

The Housing block will appear divided into smaller building capacities, each with their own identity – an expression known from Amsterdam, Nyhavn, and several cities closely associated with water. Varied types of housing create a vivid development around the central courtyard with the utmost light. The facades will appear in brick and plaster in bright friendly colors. Building heights will vary from 3 to 6 floors to achieve a built hierarchy with a host of housing quality in human scale.

The flexible dwellings exploit the daylight optimally, while the proximity to the water can be seen in the building’s expression and in the apartments’ orientation. Ground apartments will have smaller terraces and front gardens, while the remaining apartments will have large balconies or private rooftop terraces.

The Nordhavn house will be DGNB-certified, as there has been a great focus on environmental, social, and economic sustainability throughout the project.
