Upcycled construction waste wooden pavilion

Leftovers from a construction site became the wooden pavilion 'EfterLaden' at Folkemødet in 2019. The pavilion hosted events about the future of sustainable and climate-friendly solutions in construction - an industry that is one of the world's largest greenhouse gas emitters.

With a central location near Allinge harbour, the wooden pavilion had to be able to handle a large flow of people while providing an inclusive setting for the events taking place on stage. The pavilion was built at Allinge Smokehouse on a public path along the waterfront, which also needed to be accessible during Folkemødet. This placed great demands on the design. Instead of making the pavilion a stop next to the path that visitors would have to actively choose, we pulled the pavilion apart and let the path pass through. This created a space for open dialogue and debate, where passers-by became part of the activities.

The wooden pavilion was built in five staggered modules that were fully or partially covered as pergolas. One of the modules formed the stage, which is occupied by debaters, politicians and experts. In front, there was room for a seated audience on benches, and the layout of the pavilion allowed the crowd to listen in on the debate. The pavilion had a clean wooden construction, with several of the sides open with wooden slats. This made it appear light and a natural part of life at Folkemødet.

The only building material was 27 surplus CLT elements, with each of the 5 m x 2.5 m x 35 mm wooden elements broken down into smaller parts. The lightweight building elements thus functioned as an assembly kit that could be quickly erected without large cranes and just as easily disassembled after Folkemødet. The pavilion could be compactly packed up and reused for other events, and its functionality became an active part of the sustainability message.
