Øster Hurup Masterplan

Øster Hurup's overriding quality is of course its lucrative location by the water and Denmark's most child-friendly beach. The sea, the beach, the harbour, the special coastal landscape and the proximity to Lille Vildmose form a fantastically strong landscape scene for the development of Øster Hurup. With the help of atmospheric and identity-giving spatial formations, we want to use and activate the terrain, so that the story of the flat landscape is both supported and counteracted.

Typically, a town with a harbor is located in a close connection between the harbor and town, but this has not been possible in Øster Hurup, where the flat, wet landscape in its time necessitated the establishment of a harbor on a distinct island that was connected to the mainland via a bridge. Since then, the bridge has been removed and the land filled up between the island harbor and the city. Despite the immediately strengthened connection, it has helped to create an unwanted distance, which today is characterized by a wet and undefined area between city and sea. The contact with the sea must therefore be restored to emphasize the city's strength as a coastal city.

The cohesive force between city and sea must be restored by breathing new life into the bridge and thus the notion of the harbor as an island. The town's special history is staged and becomes an interesting and identity-creating layer in the town's development, which makes the establishment of a pedestrian and cycle bridge that stretches through the landscape from the town to the water and engages in dialogue with its surroundings along the way likely.

A wooden bridge in the landscape is a delicate element that, by virtue of its materiality, inscribes itself in the landscape as a conversation between human feet and nature. It is a light grip that functions as a cohesive element and at the same time is a practical connection that acts as a guide. It is also a flexible handle with numerous variation possibilities in relation to how the bridge actually lies in the landscape.

The bridge will in some places lift up and be elevated, in other places it will act as a pavement and be in the ground, while in other places it will lower slightly into the landscape. The bridge will also create an interesting movement experience that inscribes itself in the surroundings by miming the way you move in the place in question: because some places are wet and more or less impassable, a lot of movement takes place on raised areas - when you walk on the bridge , it is therefore a recognizable way of moving in accordance with the landscape. The bodily and sensory experience is thus included in the staging of the place based on the history and landscape of Øster Hurup.

The bridge is the city's new backbone. It creates a clear connection between a future dense city center and an activated harbor area.
