Design
The table lamp VL38, as the name suggests, was designed in 1938 by Vilhelm Lauritzen in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for the construction of DR's old Radio House in Copenhagen. The VL38 series which includes flooring, a table and a wall lamp is based on the original table lamp used in the studios of The Radio House. Today, it hangs on the curved wall around the concert hall on the first floor of The Radio House's foyer.
Timeless design rooted in Danish design tradition
Following a functionalist design principle where form follows function, Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL38 series with inspiration from work lamps. The lamp was tested in workshops, where it was suspended above drawing boards, and mounted on walls as reading lamps. This is reflected in the lamp's lighting, which emits a directional light and that provides a precise downward illumination. With respect for the original design's organic forms, the VL38 has since been relaunched in white/brass and later in a black version.
