The story of a Castle town

Hillerød Slotsgade is the central shopping street in Hillerød – the city that is rich in both a royal castle and a unique garden.

Frederiksborg Castle is Hillerød's cultural-historical heart and one of North Zealand's most important destinations. When we renew Hillerød Slotsgade with new pavements, urban space furniture and planting, we do so with the story of Hillerød as a castle town in the centre.

We believe that innovation happens when elements from history and the existing are put together in new constellations. With clear design references to the castle and the castle park, Slotsgaden gets a renewed clear identity, a high material quality and a very special story for the city, which can only be found in this place in the whole world. A story that will form the framework for the city going forward and that binds the castle, the lake and the center of Hillerød together.

Long-lasting solutions that patina beautifully

In the project, the materials from the castle are used in a new way and thereby give the pavement in Slotsgade a special materiality and high-quality materiality. Flooring, planting and urban space furnishings together support the movement flow of the street space and create a clear urban space hierarchy. The street space is divided into zones for walking, zones for furniture and zones for urban space and connections to the surrounding city.

As with the construction of the old castle, the focus in the street is on aesthetics, quality and robustness, with materials that patina beautifully and can last hundreds of years. The brick and noble materials such as tombak are a clear reference to the castle's materiality and long-lasting qualities.
