Foyer Series

Timelessly shaped for life

The Foyer series is good, simple Danish design in Vilhelm Lauritzen's special language of form. Carl Hansen & Søn in collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects launches the foyer series, which was created exclusively for the radio house in Copenhagen. Now the welcoming, light and sculptural series becomes available to a wider audience for the first time.

Danish Quality Design

The Foyer Series consists of a bench, a sofa and an armchair, all characterised by a distinctive interplay between the oak frame and the upholstered seats and backs. The series is carefully upholstered in textile or leather, and it takes precise and time-consuming upholstery work to finish the seats and backs with the handmade buttons.

The armrests and legs of both sofa and chair are assembled from three pieces, and hand polished with the utmost care to appear without noticeable transitions. Despite the slim design of the series, the comfort is still high due to the soft seats and backrests.

The story behind

Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the Radio House in Copenhagen for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation at a time when radio was a new and modern technology. The listed building from 1945 was created in exclusive materials such as Greenlandic marble and teak and stands today as one of the finest examples of Danish functionalism.

Vilhelm Lauritzen's keen eye for detail runs throughout the building, and all the furniture and lamps were designed for the house. This was also the case with the Foyer Series, which Vilhelm Lauritzen designed for the magnificent entrance hall.

The Foyer Series still adorns the iconic Radio House, which today houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music, but this is the first time it will be available to a wider audience. The series has been recreated in close collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects and with great respect for the original design.

"The Foyer Series is good, simple Danish design in Vilhelm Lauritzen's special language of form. The furniture is shaped according to the anatomy of the body with a thoughtful honesty - like the covered seat shell, which is supported by the wooden frame and held in place by only a few screws. It is very simple and gives the series a natural lightness in robust materials. Together with Carl Hansen & Søn, we have worked to adapt the comfort to the present while still retaining the original design that makes the series timeless – it is furniture you will have for life."
